Traveling with Pets on Transavia Airlines

Basic instructions for the transport of animals on Transavia Airlines flights.

Can I bring a pet to the Netherlands from abroad?
Yes, you can bring a pet to the Netherlands from abroad. But there are strict rules for importing pets. These rules are there to protect people and animals against diseases such as rabies. There are different rules for importing pets within and from outside the European Union. On the Dutch government website, you can find exactly what rules apply to your situation.
So-called ‘fighting dogs’ or ‘attack dogs’ that fall under the categories below may not be transported either in the cabin or in the hold. These dogs may not necessarily be of a particular breed but have a similar build to:
  • American Staffordshire Terriers (Pitbulls), or similar dogs (for example Staffordshire Bull Terriers or (mini) Bull Terriers);
  • Mastiffs, or similar dogs;
  • Tosas, or similar dogs;
  • Rotweilers, or similar dogs.
  • Snub-nosed animals may experience breathing difficulties during the flight. This is due to the high temperatures and the stress they experience. To prevent health risks and to ensure the flight is comfortable for these animals, snub-nosed animals may only be brought into the cabin. The combined weight of the animal and the carrier must not exceed 8 kg.

    • The following dog breeds are not permitted in the hold: American Bully, Boston Terrier, Boxer (all breeds), Brussels Griffon, Bulldog (all breeds), Bull Mastiff, Cane Corso, Chow Chow, Great Dane (all breeds), Lhasa Apso, Mastiff (all breeds), Pug (all breeds), Pekingese, Petit Brabançon, Shar Pei, Shih Tzu, Spaniel (Tibetan, Japanese, English and King Charles breeds), Staffordshire Bull Terrier
    • The following cat breeds are not permitted in the hold: Burmese, Exotic Shorthair, Himalayan, Persian

It is not always easy to tell whether your pet has a snub nose. Is your pet’s breed not listed on this page? Please contact our Service Centre.

You may transport your pet in our cargo hold. This is a special heated environment that is equipped with climate and pressure control. It means you can be sure that your dog or cat will travel as comfortably as possible. Please note that snub-nosed dogs and cats are not permitted in the hold, to guarantee their wellbeing. Read more about this here.

We can transport a maximum of two pets in the hold per flight in the luggage hold. Therefore, add your pet to your booking in time to ensure it can travel with you.

Are you travelling with a puppy or kitten? These young pets may also be transported together with its mother or with one family-related puppy or kitten in a kennel. Your pets must then meet the following terms and conditions:

  • The puppy or kitten is allowed in a kennel with its mother when the puppy or kitten is at least 3 months and 21 days, and no more than 6 months old.
  • The puppy or kitten is allowed in a kennel with one other family-related puppy or kitten if they are both at least 3 months and 21 days, and no more than 6 months old. There are then a total of 2 puppies or kittens in one kennel.

If your flight number starts with HV, you pay €77 per kennel per one-way flight.

For flights starting with TO, the fare for traveling with your pet starts at €100 in the hold, per transport crate and per one-way flight.*

*Price varies depending on the destination and the number of remaining spots for pets on the relevant flight.

Please note: The kennel in which your pet will travel in the hold must meet stringent requirements. It is also important that you prepare the kennel for travel yourself. You can find more information about this here.

Unfortunately, you are not allowed to take your pet to certain destinations. This has nothing to do with the country’s rules, but rather is due to the rules at the airport. Therefore, Transavia does not transport pets to or from the United Kingdom, Iceland, Scotland, the United Arab Emirates and the city of Chambéry.

Similarly, if you are arriving from Turkey, please read carefully the conditions for importing animals from this country: https://tr.ambafrance.org/Animaux-3721#:~:text=Le%20site%20du%20minist%C3%A8re%20turc,v%C3%A9t%C3%A9rinaire%20de%20bonne%20sant%C3%A9%20r%C3%A9cent.

You can add a pet while booking your flight, or afterwards via My Transavia. This is possible until 2 hours before departure, as long as you have not yet checked in. We have limited space for pets on board. Therefore, add your pet to your booking in time to ensure it can travel with you.

Add a pet to your booking:

  1. Log in to My Transavia
  2. Check your booking
  3. Book special baggage & pets
  4. Select pet in the cabin or in the cargo hold
  5. Select the pet travelling with you
  6. Pay and confirm your booking

Attention! Should you wish to cancel your pet’s ticket, please contact our Service Centre. Unfortunately, we do not reimburse the cancellation.

Your pet must have a passport called “pet passport.” This must be issued by an authorized veterinarian. The passport must include the following details:

  • Valid rabies vaccinations. Your pet must be vaccinated at least 21 days before departure.
  • The rules for the medical certificate included in the passport differ depending on the country. To learn the applicable rules in your destination country, contact the embassy or consulate of that country.

However, please note that for animals coming from third countries (territories outside the EU), a document proving a rabies antibody titration test will also be required”.

To fly with your pet, it must be chipped for identification with an electronic identification system (transponder). Was your pet tattooed in a clearly visible place before 3 July 2011? If so, your pet can also travel within the European Union with this tattoo.

The pet passport is mandatory to travel with your pets, including within the French domestic network.

Please note! if you are flying to Malta with a dog, your pet must be treated for tapeworm between 5 days and 24 hours before departure.

  • Use a suitable travel carrier to transport your pet. Your pet must stay in the carrier, which must be closed from the moment you entre the aircraft. Place this piece of hand luggage under the seat in front of you. Your pet must remain inside the carrier throughout the flight. You are also not allowed to open or move the carrier during the flight.
  • Always follow the crew’s instructions on board for a safe flight for you and your pet.
  • Give your pet a light meal and some water up to two hours before departure. If you have a dog, please walk your dog shortly before departure. Your pet will not be able to eat or drink during the flight.
  • Only give your pet a sedative after consulting a vet.
  • Always take care of all vaccinations and travel documents well ahead of your trip.
  • Check with your vet about the validity of your pet’s passport.
  • Place some comfy blankets, a towel or some newspapers at the bottom of the kennel.
  • Give your pet some time to get used to the kennel before the flight. Five days in advance is usually enough for most pets.
  • Contact the embassy of the country you are visiting well ahead of departure. They can provide more information on any special rules or quarantine requirements.
The kennel in which your pet is traveling must meet the following requirements: * Dimensions: Maximum dimensions per travel carrier or kennel: length 102 cm x width 69 cm x height 76 cm. * Weight: The maximum weight of your pet and kennel together is: 75 kg. For the safety of your pet, it is important that the kennel meets the legal requirements of IATA (International Air Transport Association):
  • That is why it is important that the kennel or pet carrier is spacious enough for your pet to comfortably stand (without touching the top), turn around and lie down.
  • The kennel should be made from fibreglass or hard plastic. Wooden kennels, kennels with metal bars or kennels made of welded wire mesh are not allowed.
  • The door should be fitted with a central locking system that locks the door at both the top and bottom.
  • To ensure that the kennel doors do not open during the flight, bring removable fasteners, such as cable ties or (resealable) tie wraps. These allow you to secure the door to the door frame extra well, if the kennel model permits it. Please note: do not attach the cable tie or tie wraps at home. Fasten them at the airport after check-in, following the instructions of the check-in desk staff.
  • The closing pins of the door must extend at least 1.6 cm beyond the edge of the kennel at both the top and bottom. (B)
  • If the kennel consists of two parts, screw these two parts together securely with bolts in each hole. We recommend using metal bolts for this purpose. Other side closures are not allowed.
  • It is not allowed to put (soft) (chewing) toys in the kennel.
  • Does your kennel have wheels? Make sure that the wheels can be dismantled or locked before travel so that the kennel is not able to roll around in the hold.
Tip: Ask at the pet shop for information about the permitted kennels and check our terms and conditions for kennels.

Are you allergic to cats or dogs and are you seated close to a pet? Let the crew know, so they can consider the options available.

You and your pet must be at the airport at least two hours before departure to allow enough time to check in your pet.

To make the trip as pleasant as possible for everyone, we kindly ask you to make sure your pet (dog or cat) is clean. Your pet must also not show any aggressive behaviour.

You may transport your pet in the cabin in a flexible pet carrier. A kennel made of hard plastic is not allowed. Your pet must stay in the carrier, which must be closed from the moment that you entre the aircraft. Place the carrier under the seat in front of you. For the safety of your pet and the passengers, you may not open or move the pet carrier during the flight. Are you and your travel companion(s) flying with two pets? It’s important to know that you cannot sit in the same row. This is for safety purposes.

Always follow the crew’s instructions on board for a safe flight. In addition to your pet, you may also bring one piece of hand luggage into the cabin.

Please note: emotional support animals and small rodents (hamsters, rabbits, guinea pigs, etc.) are not accepted on board our flights. These small animals are easily stressed, and air travel involves a number of situations that could panic them: leaving their usual environment, airport noise, climate changes, handling and transportation by plane.

You can go on holiday alone or with loved ones, and that can include your pet. It’s lovely to bring your dog or cat with you on holiday! But can you fly with a dog? And are cats allowed on the plane? Thankfully, the answer is yes, pets are permitted on the plane.

If you wish to take a dog or cat with you on Transavia, pets can be booked in while you book your flight. This is also possible after booking, up to 2 hours before departure. Make sure you book your pets on the plane in good time, as there are only a limited number places available. You can find out everything you need to know on this page to ensure your journey goes smoothly.

If you are bringing your dog or cat onto the plane with you, your four-legged friend needs travel documents, just as you do. For this reason, please request the ‘pet passport’ from your vet in good time and ensure you have a good kennel or travel bag to take your cat or dog on the plane. This will make the journey far more comfortable for both of you. Once you’re properly prepared and have all your documents in order, make sure that you and your pet arrive at the airport 2 hours prior to departure. Bon voyage!
