Compliance with animal welfare provisions and import and export regulations for animals
Please note the minimum age for traveling animals. For cats and dogs, the minimum age is:
- 12 weeks
- 15 weeks for travel to/from/via Germany
- 6 months for dogs travelling to the USA
Please make sure to check the import and export regulations of the country of departure, transit and arrival, e.g. with the consulate, well in advance of booking your flight. Please also check with your veterinarian about the applicable animal welfare provisions for traveling with your pet. Obtain all necessary travel documents for your pet so that nothing gets in the way of your trip.
If Discover Airlines has to refuse to transport the animal because the provisions have not been complied with, Discover Airlines is not liable for the resulting costs (e.g., rebooking fees, accommodation for the animal, hotel stay).
Discover Airlines also reserves the right to refuse to transport animals in the hold due to extreme weather conditions at the destination. This can happen at short notice or seasonally.
Please note: each passenger is allowed to carry a maximum of 2 pets (in a compliant travel carrier). The animals must not be intended for sale. Transportation can be in the cabin and/or hold:
- 2 animals of the same species in the cabin in a travel carrier, or
- 1 animal in the cabin and 1 animal in the hold, or
- 2 animals in the hold in 2 separate travel carriers, or
- 2 animals of the same species in the hold in one travel carrier.
Special animal welfare provisions apply for the transport of several animals in one travel carrier:
- A maximum of 2 adult animals of comparable size, accustomed to each other, weighing up to 14 kg each, may travel in a cage.
- Up to 2 weaned puppies or kittens may travel in a travel carrier if they are from one litter, are not older than 6 months, and weigh no more than 14 kg each. Please check any country regulations that may differ.
Discover Airlines does not accept pregnant animals.
Registration times for the transport of animals
Your pet must have been registered and confirmed in a timely manner, i.e.:
- up to 72 hours before departure online or through your travel agency, or
- at least 24 hours before departure at the Discover Airlines Service Center.
The deadline for assistance dogs is 48 hours prior to departure.
Since quotas are limited, we recommend that you make your pet’s reservation early, preferably when booking your flight.
Tips on ensuring the well-being of your pet
- If possible, get your pet used to the travel carrier at home by placing them in the closed travel carrier several times for approximately two hours and then rewarding them.
- Many animals are very nervous before and during a flight. Nevertheless, you should consider whether you want to calm your pet with medication. Doing this can make your pet’s reactions unpredictable. For example, circulatory problems may occur during the flight. Please discuss this with your veterinarian.
- Place a “security blanket” and favorite toy in the travel carrier to soothe your pet with a familiar smell.
- Check with your veterinarian to determine how you should adjust your pet’s food during the flight, if necessary.
Check-in options
All guests with pets can access online and mobile check-in 30 hours before departure. Passengers traveling with their pet in the cabin must collect their boarding pass at the airport check-in counter.
The boarding pass for passengers whose pets are traveling in the hold will be issued during online/mobile check-in. These passengers cannot check their baggage at the self-service bag drop.
Please bring your pet to the Discover Airlines check-in at least two hours before departure in a transport box that meets all requirements. For flights departing from Frankfurt, we recommend arriving at the airport at least three hours before departure.
