Can You Transfer Pets via Frankfurt with Discover Airlines?

Pets on discover airlines If you are planning to use Discover Airlines as a connecting flight through Frankfurt Airport to transport a rescue animal or your own pet, there is one critical rule you need to know before you book.

⚠️ No Pet Transfers on Discover Airlines – Direct Flights Only

Discover Airlines only permits the transport of animals in the hold on direct flights to or from Frankfurt and Munich. Stopovers and connecting flights are not permitted for hold animals.

This is an important distinction for anyone coordinating rescue flights from Cyprus through Frankfurt. If your itinerary involves a stopover, Discover Airlines cannot carry the animal in the hold on either leg of the journey.

What About Cabin Travel via Frankfurt?

If the animal travels with a voluntary flight escort in the cabin, the situation is different. Cabin passengers can take their pet with them through the passenger transit area and reach the connecting gate themselves – just as any passenger would with carry-on luggage.

To travel in the cabin, the total weight of the pet and the carrier must not exceed 8 kg. The carrier must fit under the seat in front and remain closed throughout the flight.

This makes cabin transport the only realistic option for a Frankfurt transfer with Discover Airlines.

Discover Airlines Cabin Pet Rules – Quick Summary

  • Maximum combined weight (pet + carrier): 8 kg
  • Maximum 2 animals per passenger in one compliant carrier
  • Must be pre-booked via the Discover Airlines Service Center: +49 (0) 69 86 798 200
  • Complete the cabin transport form and bring it to check-in
  • Online check-in opens 30 hours before departure – but cabin pet passengers must collect their boarding pass at the airport counter
  • Arrive at Frankfurt Airport at least 3 hours before departure
  • Register at least 72 hours before departure (online) or 24 hours before at the Service Center
  • Minimum age: 12 weeks generally; 15 weeks for travel to/from/via Germany

If Your Animal Must Travel in the Hold – Consider Lufthansa Cargo

For larger animals or routes that require a Frankfurt stopover, Lufthansa Cargo is the better-established option. The Frankfurt Animal Lounge at Gate 26 operates 24/7 and is specifically designed for animals in transit, with separate import, export and transit handling zones, 61 dog kennels, 3 quiet zones for cats, and 18 climate chambers.

Lufthansa Cargo also offers a Pet Premium service for dogs and cats on Frankfurt stopover flights, which includes a larger kennel space, special care instructions, and a photo update during your pet’s stay.

If your animal is not travelling with Lufthansa Cargo, contact your airline in advance regarding documentary procedures at the Frankfurt Animal Lounge.

Frankfurt Airport Transit – What You Need to Know

Whether your pet is in the cabin or being handled as cargo, keep the following Frankfurt-specific rules in mind:

  • Since 15 January 2022, animals that are only transiting through the EU must also meet all EU health and documentation requirements. This is checked on a random basis.
  • There are no designated pet relief areas in the Frankfurt transit zone. Bring suitable materials to manage any accidents and keep your pet on a lead at all times.
  • If the transport box needs cleaning, use the airport toilets.
  • You, as the pet owner or escort, are solely responsible for ensuring all vaccinations and documents comply with EU regulations for arrival, departure and transit.
